As we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I find myself reflecting on my own journey, one that has taken me from the world of ICT to geospatial sciences and now into the rapidly evolving space industry. It’s a path that has been anything but linear, but it’s one that has fuelled my passion for innovation, problem-solving, and driving meaningful change in technology and science.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working across ICT, geospatial sciences, and now space technology at Southern Cross Space, bringing together a unique mix of expertise in software-as-a-service (SaaS), AI-driven automation, cloud computing, and digital transformation. From my early days in IT solution sales and consulting to working with global companies like Wolters Kluwer, Symantec, Sun Microsystems, and Gartner, I’ve always been driven by curiosity and a passion for leveraging technology to create real business impact.
My transition into geospatial technology felt like a natural extension of my ICT background. At a Tier 1 national aerial imagery company, I helped integrate SaaS and data solutions into geospatial applications, ranging from 2D aerial imagery and airborne LiDAR to 3D modelling and AI-powered analytics. The ability to turn complex geospatial data into actionable insights for industries like utilities, mining and exploration, construction, and government was both challenging and rewarding.
Today, I find myself in an industry where few women have ventured – space. The intersection of geospatial technology and space applications have opened exciting opportunities, and I’m honoured to be at the forefront of this transformation. Satellite technology has become integral to earth observation, telecommunications, and global connectivity, so I’m leveraging my experience to drive innovation in these areas.
“On the tenth anniversary of this important day, and as we reflect on 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, let’s help pave a path to STEM careers that women and girls deserve – and our world needs.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres
Industries and governments increasingly rely on satellite-driven geospatial data, real-time analytics, and AI-powered insights to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from climate change and disaster management to infrastructure planning and risk mitigation. Being part of this movement, shaping the way space technology is commercialised and applied, is both exciting and deeply fulfilling.
Beyond my commercial and technical expertise, I’m passionate about supporting and mentoring women in STEM. As a member of Women in Tech Brisbane, Women in Digital, and the Sales Leaders Forum, I actively advocate for more women to enter and thrive in technology fields. In 2014, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote at the Women in Technology Forum, where I spoke about the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where women can lead, innovate, and succeed.
Representation matters. When I first stepped into the space industry, I quickly realised how underrepresented women are in this field. That’s why it’s more important than ever to encourage the next generation of women and girls to explore careers in science and technology. We need more women shaping the future of AI, automation and space exploration.
I am driven by three core values: commitment, pragmatism, and passion. I am always committed to my clients and the brands I represent. I believe in rolling up my sleeves and getting the job done. And I’m passionate about continuous learning and winning. These values have guided me throughout my career, and they continue to inspire me as I navigate the evolving landscape of space technology.
On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I celebrate not only my own journey but also the journeys of countless women who are continuing to push boundaries, break stereotypes, and lead innovation in STEM. So, to all the young women out there dreaming of a career in science and technology, please go for it. The world needs your ideas, your leadership and your passion.
